Source.ag, the AI-driven leader in greenhouse automation, today announced the launch of Plant Balance Metrics, a first-of-its-kind feature within Source Workspace that quantifies crop balance and provides growers with a clear, data-driven view of plant health.
The new system introduces two proprietary metrics—the Plant Balance Factor (PBF) and the Generative Trend Indicator (GTI)—that distill complex biological processes into actionable weekly insights. Together, they empower growers to anticipate crop needs, optimize steering strategies, and unlock higher yields with fewer risks.
“Greenhouse growers have long asked the same question: How is my crop really doing?” said Cedric Canovas, VP of Data and Plant Science at Source.ag. “By transforming decades of plant science and field research into intuitive, quantitative metrics, we give growers the clarity to move from reactive adjustments to proactive, predictive crop management.”
At the core of the innovation are two breakthrough measures. The Plant Balance Factor (PBF) evaluates the equilibrium between a plant’s energy production, or Source, and its growth demands, or Sink. A zero balance indicates stability, while positive or negative values reveal conservative strategies with excess energy or aggressive strategies marked by energy deficit. Complementing this, the Generative Trend Indicator (GTI) reveals whether a plant is prioritizing generative growth—fruits and flowers—or vegetative growth—leaves and stems. This empowers growers to fine-tune irrigation, nutrition, and climate inputs with greater precision.
Early adopters are already seeing tangible benefits. “Tracking generative development and plant balance has been incredibly valuable,” said Gordon Yakel, Head Grower at Delta View Farms. “My crops are finally where they should be. They look beautiful, and we’ve achieved a good balance.”
Plant Balance Metrics is now available to tomato growers, with rollouts for peppers and cucumbers in the pipeline. The feature also integrates seamlessly with Source.ag’s Cultivation Management platform, enabling scenario simulations that help growers identify issues before they arise and continuously refine their strategies.
“This is not just a feature—it’s a new North Star metric for controlled environment agriculture,” added Canovas. “By providing predictive clarity into plant energy dynamics, we’re driving resilience, profitability, and long-term sustainability for growers worldwide.”
With the launch of Plant Balance Metrics, Source.ag is redefining the operating system of greenhouse farming—turning plant physiology into a measurable, predictable, and ultimately profitable advantage for the global food system.
