Ashitaka Herbicide debuts as India’s maize market expands amid rising demand

Godrej Agrovet Limited (GAVL), in partnership with ISK Japan, today announced the launch of Ashitaka, a next-generation herbicide tailored for maize farmers in India. The product promises to tackle one of the sector’s most persistent challenges—weed infestation during early crop growth—unlocking higher yields and more efficient use of soil resources.

Weeds, especially grasses and broad-leaved species, remain a significant drag on maize productivity, competing with crops for nutrients, moisture, and light. Applied at the 2–4 weed leaf stage, Ashitaka delivers targeted, effective weed control, enabling farmers to safeguard crop performance during crucial growth phases such as flowering and grain filling.

Rajavelu NK, CEO, Crop Protection Business, Godrej Agrovet, said: “Our mission is to deliver innovative, research-driven solutions that empower Indian farmers and uplift farming families by future-proofing agriculture against environmental and market challenges.”

Anil Choubey, GM – Marketing, Crop Protection Business, Godrej Agrovet, added: “Ashitaka’s precise weed management reduces crop-weed competition, ensuring maize plants make better use of limited soil moisture and nutrients. This strengthens plant health at critical stages, ultimately enhancing grain yield and farmer profitability.”

The launch underscores Godrej Agrovet’s strategy of leveraging global R&D collaborations to bring advanced crop protection technologies to Indian fields. With maize emerging as both a food and industrial crop, Ashitaka is positioned to play a pivotal role in supporting productivity, farmer resilience, and India’s growing agri-economy.
