Boomitra signs landmark soil carbon removal deal with Restoration Climate and Ethereum Climate Platform

Boomitra, a global leader in soil carbon removal and 2023 Earthshot Prize winner, has announced a landmark agreement with Restoration Climate and the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP) for the purchase of 500,000 soil carbon removal credits over five years. The credits will be generated from Boomitra’s Northern Mexico Grassland Restoration Project, making this one of the largest soil carbon transactions announced to date. It also marks the first soil carbon investment by both Restoration Climate and ECP, underscoring soil’s emergence as a vital carbon sink in the global climate finance landscape.

Boomitra’s Northern Mexico Grassland project, recently registered by Verra, is the first in the world to use AI-powered remote sensing to measure soil carbon sequestration. This innovation significantly lowers the cost of verification and ensures that more of the revenue from carbon credits goes directly to farmers and ranchers. The project began with 1.5 million acres and has expanded to 4 million acres in just one year, working with 139 ranchers and nine regional partners. Located across the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts, the project supports regenerative grazing practices that restore degraded lands, increase biodiversity, improve livelihoods, and enhance carbon storage. Boomitra estimates the project will remove over 25 million tonnes of CO₂ over the next 20 years.

Aadith Moorthy, CEO and Founder of Boomitra, said, “This deal is an important marker in the development of the soil carbon market. It not only demonstrates that soil carbon removal can operate at scale and in developing countries; it also shows the vibrancy of this market and the diversity of buyers attracted to soil carbon’s unique attributes as a climate solution that is scalable and cost-effective, while also delivering powerful co-benefits for agriculture, biodiversity, and local communities.”

The Ethereum Climate Platform, a decentralized initiative born from Ethereum’s 2022 “Merge” that cut the blockchain’s emissions by 99 per cent, is channeling finance toward high-quality carbon removal projects to address the network’s historical emissions. Restoration Climate, a commodities investment firm, brings deep experience in market-based environmental solutions and is investing in high-integrity carbon projects that link ecological restoration with economic value.

Benedikt von Butler, Principal and Co-Founder of Restoration Climate, commented, “Soil carbon is a critical but often overlooked piece of the climate solution. Boomitra’s ability to measure and verify improvements at scale is transforming how land restoration is financed, ensuring that ranchers and farmers directly benefit while delivering real, lasting climate impact.”

Bill Kentrup, Managing Director and President of the Ethereum Climate Platform, added, “Talking with ranchers who have seen their land recover, and their cattle thrive, I witnessed the real-world impact of this project. What makes Boomitra’s work so powerful is how technology is transforming what’s possible—AI and satellite data are revolutionizing the way we measure soil carbon, making large-scale restoration more efficient and accessible. We’re proud to partner with Boomitra to scale these solutions and bring soil carbon to the forefront of global climate efforts.”

Boomitra currently supports over 150,000 farmers across four continents and five million acres. To date, its projects have removed more than 10 million tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere. With its technology-first approach and deep local partnerships, Boomitra continues to set new standards for integrity, scale, and equity in carbon removal.
