The power plant, located in Tirunelveli district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, is expected to generate about 50.7 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Fourth Partner Energy Private Limited (Fourth Partner) signed a long-term loan of up to 1.2 billion Indian rupees (about $14.7 million) to construct and operate a 25-megawatt solar photovoltaic-based power plant to increase clean and low-cost energy supply to commercial and industrial customers.

The power plant, located in Tirunelveli district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, is expected to generate about 50.7 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually and will directly sell power to commercial and industrial users. India’s progressive open-access renewable energy policy allows a group of consumers to purchase electricity directly from an Independent Power Producer (IPP).

“Open access energy procurement can play an important role in businesses achieving their net zero emissions targets,” said Suzanne Gaboury, ADB’s Private Sector Operations Department Director General. “Solutions like this are being spearheaded by ADB to promote renewable energy across the region. This is ADB’s first direct financing to a renewable energy plant of this nature and is expected to crowd in international commercial financing to further decarbonize the commercial and industrial sector”.

Nearly 41,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year will be avoided through the plant, which would otherwise have been generated by conventional fossil fuel plants.

“We are excited to add ADB to our esteemed list of green financiers as we move closer to our 3.5 GW renewable energy target by 2025.  Fourth Partner is also constructing solar and wind parks across Ottapidaram, Tuticorin, and Nandikundu in Tamil Nadu,” said Vivek Subramanian, Fourth Partner Energy Co-Founder and Executive Director. “We see this project as the beginning of our long-standing partnership with ADB to deliver cleaner, affordable power to India’s commercial and industrial sector,”

This is the first step on a journey to more sustainable rice sourcing

Riviana Foods Inc., America’s leading rice company, announced Success Rice will partner with a group of farmers in Arkansas who are committed to sustainable rice farming. Working with SAI Platform’s Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA), a toolset for farms and companies in agricultural value chains to help assess, improve, and verify on-farm sustainability performance, Riviana Foods can support the farmers’ engagement in sustainable farming practices. The company has committed to purchasing rice from these farmers (using a mass balance approach) in an amount that is equal to the volume of its Success white and brown rice consumption. This is the first step on a journey to more sustainable rice sourcing.

“We consider sustainable agricultural practices to be essential, not only from a good stewardship standpoint but also as a fundamental business principle,” said Erica Larson, Director of Marketing at Riviana Foods. “To ensure a better future, it is crucial we prioritise support for farmers who engage in sustainable practices.”

In utilising the insights provided through the FSA partnership, Riviana Foods can advance sustainable agriculture through focused farm support. By working with a group of local Arkansas farmers known as a Farm Management Group, Riviana Foods manages this group as their Farm Management Group Coordinator. These farmers grow rice that will be sourced by Riviana Foods and implement FSA Silver-level practices to create a sustainable operation that produces verified sustainably grown rice. The Farm Management Group can ensure their farming practices allow their farms to thrive through various means, like identifying clean and sustainable sources of renewable energy, soil management, water management, and air quality and emissions, to name a few. All of this is possible through the FSA acting as a governance mechanism, so that Riviana Foods has a third party verifying the Farm Management Group’s commitment to sustainability.

Supporting sustainable farming efforts is part of the Success Rice’s Growing for Tomorrow initiative. It’s also part of Riviana Foods’ five pillars of sustainability, which focus on reductions around Waste, Energy, Emissions, Water and Packaging.

On August 8, 2022, The ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh (IGFRI) signed an MoU with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi. 

IGFRI and TERI will collaborate in various areas including: 

– Rehabilitation of Red Mud Dumping Area and other degraded    areas such as Fly ash ponds, Coal, Limestone and Lignite Mines into Green Belt Development through grassland/ silvipasture / hortipasture.

– To provide suitable grass and fodder species, whenever required in research projects.
– Support in developing joint proposal preparation  as consortium partner for various agencies
– Improving Livelihood of farmers and  Forest Dependent Communities
– Climate Change Mitigation and Climate Vulnerability for adaptation
– Biodiversity Conservation
– Ecosystem Services and Carbon Finance Mechanism
– Training and capacity building on above subjects

IGFRI and TERI will implement joint research projects of common interests requiring expertise and logistics from both the parties and study impacts.

FMC Corporation, a leading agricultural sciences company, has been conferred a Certificate of Recognition for its exemplary contribution towards water stewardship in India at the inaugural TERI-IWA-UNDP Water Sustainability Awards 2021-22 on World Water Day 2022. The awards programme was jointly organised by the Energy Research Institute, the International Water Association and the United Nations Development Programme.

FMC runs an ongoing campaign under its flagship Project Samarth that seeks to provide access to safe and potable drinking water to 200,000 farmer families by 2024 in India. Project Samarth has to date commissioned 57 community water purification plants in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, benefiting nearly 100,000 farming families.

Ravi Annavarapu, President, FMC India said, “Our goal is to empower the farming community and raise living standards through various initiatives and community outreach programmes like Project Samarth. Over 4,000 FMC technical field experts engage with farmers about good agriculture practices and the sustainable use of water to enhance productivity while optimising water use. Apart from commissioning water purification plants, FMC also promotes the sustainable use of water in agriculture through its wide network of technical experts and channel partners.
