This significant expansion marks a milestone in Hendrix Genetics’ mission to enhance shrimp breeding and meet the growing demand for high-quality shrimp genetics in the Indian market

Hendrix Genetics, a global leader in multi-species breeding, genetics, and technology, is pleased to announce the grand opening of its new shrimp Breeding Multiplication Centre (BMC) in Ranasthalam – Mandal, Srikakulam District in the Andhra Pradesh region of India. In early 2022, we formed a strategic Joint Venture partnership with Sapthagiri Hatcheries, one of the largest – and most successful – hatchery businesses in India. This significant expansion marks a milestone in Hendrix Genetics’ mission to enhance shrimp breeding and meet the growing demand for high-quality shrimp genetics in the Indian market.

Hendrix Genetics is proud to be the only shrimp breeding company with operations in all major shrimp markets worldwide. The Indian BMC is expertly managed by Kona Bay, a subsidiary of Hendrix Genetics, and is under the local leadership of Deepak Patnaik. The opening of the BMC is also in line with the idea of Kona Bay’s will to decentralise its production to avoid high-risk export business, ensuring our clients always have access to our products. With a broodstock capacity exceeding 150,000, our Indian BMC is set to greatly improve shrimp breeding in the region.

This BMC will produce the same high-quality shrimp products as those currently imported from our Hawaii facility (the home of our R&D genetic engine), ensuring that our customers continue to receive the superior genetics they have come to trust. Moreover, the BMC maintains the same genetics as the current imported broodstock from Hawaii, which is renowned for it’s far from pathogens biosecure environment, thus maintaining a Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) status. In addition, local sentinel and commercial challenges allow for a direct line of data to the breeding nucleus in Hawaii. Shrimp reared under Indian conditions will result in a more adapted and resilient shrimp suited for the Indian market.

Our Indian BMC implements world-leading biosecurity measures, including its strategic location 1 kilometre from the ocean, a 2-kilometre exclusion zone around the site, state-of-the-art water filtration systems, effluent sterilisation, internal quarantine and grow-out modules to keep batches separate.

With the opening of this Indian BMC, Hendrix Genetics is well-positioned to consider the establishment of a Nucleus Breeding Center in the future, further enhancing its commitment to shrimp breeding excellence in India.

This also marks the opening of our second BMC, leveraging thus already proven processes and systems from Indonesia. Hendrix Genetics is dedicated to working closely with Indian partners to find innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by today’s shrimp farming industry and also will be best placed to secure a market leader position.

The breeding activity of zebrafish was carried out by manipulating the photoperiod and temperature conditions

Division of Fish Genetics and Biotechnology, Faculty of Fisheries, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) have successfully conducted the breeding of an ornamental freshwater fish commonly known as Zebrafish, (Danio rerio) under cold water conditions. The experiment was conducted by the B.F.Sc. 4th-year student, Saif-ullah under the guidance of scientists of the division Dr Mohd. Ashraf Rather and Dr Irfan Ahmad. The breeding activity of zebrafish was carried out by manipulating the photoperiod and temperature conditions. The eggs were successfully collected and their hatching process was observed. The methodology can be
used for broodstock and seed production of Zebrafish in the valley.

Zebrafish also being a fish of ornamental value can now be reproduced in cold water conditions and offers tremendous scope for young aquapreneurs of Kashmir. Zebrafish also finds wide application in
scientific and biomedical research for its unique developmental and biological characteristics.

Prof (Dr) Massarat Khan, Dean, Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K and Hon’ble Vice-chancellor SKUAST-K, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai have congratulated the whole team and have pinned hope on the decimation of this technology for the local ichtyofauna for conservation and propagation. It is here pertinent to mention that the Faculty of Fisheries SKUAST-K is located at Rangil, Nagabal, Ganderbal is the only Fisheries College in the country with Hill and Coldwater Fisheries, offering BFSc, MFSc and PhD courses in various disciplines of Fisheries.

Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Minister of state for Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying emphasised the importance of adopting the advanced breeding technologies and its implementation at the ground level

Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is organising awareness programme on entrepreneurship schemes and other beneficiary-oriented flagship programmes of the Department. It is being done through Common Service Centres network by holding 8000 village level camps across the country. The is being organised from April 25 to 28 April 2022. Each day one lakh farmers will be joining through Common Service Centres across the country.

Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Minister of state for Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying addressed the farmers connected recently through camps and informed that realigned National Livestock Mission (NLM) and Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) schemes now have a component of breeder farm entrepreneurs and fodder entrepreneurs. One lakh farmer from Northern Eastern region states, Bihar, Odisha West Bengal participated, NLM will help in creating rural entrepreneurship and help in creating better livelihood opportunity for unemployed youth and livestock farmers in the cattle, dairy, poultry, sheep, goat, piggery, feed and fodder sector paving the way towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Secretary (DoF & DAHD I/c), Jatindra Nath Swain briefed the farmers about Pradhan Mantri Mantsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Fisheries & Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF). He added that flagship schemes of Department of Fisheries can be availed by fishers and fish farmers from every corner of the country. He also mentioned that, in order to create the forward and backward linkage for the produce available at the unorganised sector and for connecting it with organised sector, these entrepreneurship schemes of the Ministry would help in development of entrepreneurship.
