Assam agarwood goes global in historic Gulf debut

The inaugural export unlocks new opportunities for farmers and MSMEs as Assam builds a premium foothold in the global oud supply chain

Assam has marked a decisive inflection point in its agro-forestry and high-value export economy with the successful execution of its first legally sanctioned agarwood chip shipment to the Gulf region, signaling the formal emergence of a globally competitive aromatic commodities corridor rooted in the Northeast’s natural endowments and policy-enabled cultivation ecosystem. The consignment, dispatched to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, represents not merely a trade transaction but the operational activation of a long-anticipated value chain poised to reposition Assam within the upper echelons of the global fragrance and incense economy.

The development underscores the maturation of a regulated agarwood framework under the state’s progressive policy architecture, which has systematically transitioned the sector from fragmented, informal activity to a structured, compliance-driven industry anchored in cultivation transparency, certification integrity, and export readiness aligned with international conventions. This shift is enabling Assam-grown agarwood, renowned for its superior resin concentration and aromatic complexity, to command heightened recognition in premium global markets.

Industry projections indicate that, under scaled plantation expansion, improved processing infrastructure, and strengthened global distribution networks, the sector holds the potential to evolve into a Rs 50,000 crore annual opportunity, transforming rural livelihoods, accelerating agro-forestry monetisation, and generating high-value employment across cultivation, distillation, logistics, and export services.

The inaugural Gulf shipment reflects years of coordinated policy intervention, farmer mobilisation, scientific cultivation practices, and regulatory compliance, culminating in a structured export framework that integrates CITES protocols and DGFT licensing mechanisms. This institutional alignment has been pivotal in legitimising trade flows and enabling direct market access for producers previously constrained by informal intermediaries.

Agarwood, globally revered as oud, occupies a rarefied position within the luxury fragrance ecosystem, with applications spanning high-end perfumery, incense, aromatherapy, and cultural rituals across the Middle East and beyond. Assam’s unique agro-climatic conditions confer a distinct aromatic profile, positioning the state as a potential epicentre for premium-grade supply in an increasingly demand-intensive global market.

The emergence of organised exports is expected to catalyse a broader ecosystem expansion, encompassing nursery development, scientific plantations, value-added processing units, and export-oriented MSME clusters. This integrated growth trajectory is likely to deepen rural value capture while embedding Assam more firmly within global high-margin botanical supply chains.

With the successful initiation of Gulf-bound shipments, Assam has effectively crossed a strategic threshold—transitioning from latent potential to active participation in the international agarwood trade. The sector now stands at the cusp of institutional scale-up, where policy stability, private investment, and global demand convergence may together define its next phase of exponential expansion.
