Unlocking rumen genome: Dairy Co-op Premier Select Sires backs Native Microbials’ expansion

Premier Select Sires Inc., a leading farmer-owned cooperative in the U.S. dairy genetics sector, has entered into a distribution partnership with Native Microbials Inc., a pioneer in microbial genomics, to expand access to the company’s flagship product Galaxis Frontier. Beginning September 2025, Premier Select Sires will distribute Galaxis Frontier across the eastern United States, significantly broadening the product’s availability to dairy producers.

Galaxis Frontier is the first and only anaerobic rumen microbial consortia containing four native species critical to the biochemical function of the rumen. By enhancing the genetic makeup of the rumen microbiome, the solution has been shown to deliver measurable improvements in cow health and productivity. Trials in academic and commercial settings have documented gains in milk yield and energy-corrected milk, higher colostrum production, improved feed efficiency, reduced incidence of early culling and metabolic disease, and better outcomes in immune function, energy metabolism, and mammary development.

For Premier Select Sires, the partnership represents a strategic extension of nearly nine decades of genetic improvement, traditionally centered on selective breeding, artificial insemination, and advanced reproductive technologies. With the addition of Galaxis Frontier, the cooperative moves into the emerging field of rumen genomics, enabling producers to influence performance through microbial genetics in parallel with bovine genomics.

Native Microbials, already active in California’s Central Valley, the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountain region, and the Midwest, will now extend its footprint into the eastern U.S., one of the most significant dairy-producing geographies in the country. Premier Select Sires’ established distribution and advisory network provides a channel for scaling adoption of the technology among dairy farmers seeking both productivity gains and herd health improvements.

The collaboration underscores a broader trend in livestock innovation: the shift from animal-centric genetic improvement to microbiome-enabled performance gains. As the dairy industry faces mounting pressures to improve efficiency, sustainability, and profitability, rumen genomics offers producers a new dimension of genetic precision—targeting the microbiome that drives energy conversion and overall productivity in cows.
