As climate volatility begins to reshape India’s agricultural map, Kerala is making a calculated pivot. The latest collaboration between Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and the Kerala Climate Resilient Agri Value Chain Modernization Project (KERA) signals more than an academic agreement—it’s a strategic move to redefine how farming adapts to a warming planet.
In a major step towards enhancing climate resilience in Kerala’s agriculture sector, the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and the Kerala Climate Resilient Agri Value Chain Modernization Project (KERA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly implement climate-smart and low-emission agricultural practices across the state.
The MoU was signed by Vishnu Raj, Additional Project Director, KERA, and A Sakeer Husain, Registrar, KAU.
Under the collaboration, the two institutions will work together to promote Climate-Resilient Agriculture (CRA) practices suited to Kerala’s diverse agro-ecological zones. The partnership aims to upgrade soil testing laboratories, strengthen advisory systems, and pilot low-carbon paddy cultivation techniques such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) in priority districts.
“This MoU marks an important milestone in Kerala’s efforts to future-proof its agriculture sector against climate risks,” Vishnu Raj said. “By combining KAU’s scientific and research expertise with KERA’s implementation capacity, we aim to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices and improve farmer livelihoods.”
The initiative also includes the establishment of the Kerala Agro Climate Research Centre at KAU, with support from the state Agriculture Department’s IT cell. The centre will support the development of digital crop advisories, promote agro-climatic research, and build capacity among farmers and extension workers.
Officials said the agreement aligns with Kerala’s broader vision to integrate scientific research, technology, and global partnerships—such as those with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and CWRDM—to build a resilient, market-oriented agricultural ecosystem.
KERA is a five-year, World Bank-supported initiative focused on modernising agricultural value chains and building climate risk preparedness across Kerala’s farming sector.
