A virtual kisan mela was recently organised by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for the farmers, farm women and youths of Nag Kalan Jahangir, Amritsar. With the theme ’Efficient paddy straw management, keeps Mother Earth exultant,’ the mela witnessed large scale participation of farmers and farm women.
Anirudh Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary (Development), Punjab and Vice-Chancellor, PAU, appealed to the farmers not to indulge in illegal practice of paddy stubble burning as straw burning affects soil, human and animal health. He advised them to go for in-situ management of crop residue as it reduces dependency on fertilisers and increases wheat productivity. He also urged the farmers to avail subsidy (online) being provided by the State government for in-situ paddy straw management. Tewari also stressed upon saving water, the precious natural resource and opting for crop diversification by adopting the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. He said protecting soil, water and air were need of the hour.
Dr Navtej Singh Bains, Director of Research, PAU, apprised the farmers of the newly released varieties and latest recommendations of production and protection technologies.
Dr Jaskarn Singh Mahal, Director of Extension Education, PAU, urged the farmers to discuss their farm issues with PAU and industry experts and seek solutions for the same during the panel discussion.
Dr Bikramjit Singh, Deputy Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Amritsar, proposed the vote of thanks.
Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, while conducting the programme, called upon the farmers to remain in contact with PAU experts for technical inputs.
The mela saw panel discussions on natural resource management with special reference to crop residue management and opportunities of allied occupation in agriculture.
