Maharashtra Plans world’s largest 1,200-Acre agricultural market near Vadhvan port

The new hub will enable farmers across Maharashtra to sell fruits, vegetables, grains, and other produce at both national and international levels, greatly enhancing market access for the state’s agricultural sector

Maharashtra has approved the establishment of a 1,200-acre international-standard agricultural market near Panvel or Vadhvan port, set to become the world’s largest agri-market hub.

The Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, passed by the Legislative Assembly in December 2025, supports this transformative project aimed at revolutionizing agricultural trade in the region.

Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal stated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar envisioned a market surpassing Navi Mumbai’s 175-acre terminal market.

The new hub will enable farmers across Maharashtra to sell fruits, vegetables, grains, and other produce at both national and international levels, greatly enhancing market access for the state’s agricultural sector. The market will include state-of-the-art facilities such as cleaning, grading, storage, primary processing, packaging, and extensive parking infrastructure. Its strategic location near the Rs 76,220 crore Vadhvan port project in Palghar district will ensure seamless connectivity through robust rail, road, and port networks. This positioning will facilitate efficient movement of agricultural produce.

The Vadhvan port, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2024, is designed to rank among the world’s top 10 ports with a natural depth of 20 meters. The agricultural market is expected to complement the port infrastructure, creating an integrated ecosystem for agricultural exports and trade. This will connect Maharashtra’s farming communities to global markets through advanced logistics and storage systems.

The project aims to provide farmers with opportunities to expand their reach beyond local markets, enabling them to access broader domestic and international trade networks. By combining modern facilities with strong infrastructure, the hub is poised to enhance the efficiency of agricultural trade in Maharashtra. The integration of cleaning, grading, and storage services will support farmers in maintaining produce quality while ensuring smooth export operations.

The proximity to Vadhvan port adds a logistical advantage, as the port’s development aligns with the vision of creating a world-class trade ecosystem. This initiative represents a significant step toward modernizing Maharashtra’s agricultural trade infrastructure. It not only supports the state’s farmers by providing better market access but also positions the region as a key player in global agricultural trade.

The project underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging infrastructure development for economic growth and empowering the agricultural sector to compete on an international scale. With this market, Maharashtra is set to redefine agricultural trade dynamics in India.
