Orbia’s Netafim reinvents orchard cooling in age of climate extremes

In a year when orchards from Mexico to India are bracing for record-breaking heat, Orbia Advance Corporation S.A.B. de C.V. has introduced a technology that could redefine how high-value crops survive climate extremes. Its Precision Agriculture business, Netafim, celebrating 60 years at the forefront of precision irrigation, today announced the launch of Mega-PULSAR, a full-coverage pulsing sprinkler system designed to protect orchards from intensifying heatwaves and the crippling effects of severe heat stress.

Tailored for growers of subtropical fruits such as avocado, mango, lychee, and other high-value crops, Mega-PULSAR is the newest addition to Orbia Netafim’s extreme weather mitigation portfolio. It addresses a pressing reality: heatwaves are not only becoming more frequent but are striking during critical growth stages—particularly fruit set and pre-harvest periods—when both yield and quality are most at risk.

Microclimates on Demand
Mega-PULSAR operates by delivering uniform, low-volume water pulses throughout the orchard canopy, creating a localized microclimate that boosts humidity and lowers temperatures. The system’s proprietary pulsation mechanism produces a “light rain” pattern, enabling both direct cooling—where droplets reduce tree surface temperature—and evaporative cooling, which decreases ambient air temperature as the water evaporates. This dual-action approach shields sensitive crops from heat stress while maximizing water-use efficiency, an essential consideration in regions where water scarcity compounds climate risk.

High Performance, Low Overhead
The design of Mega-PULSAR sets it apart from conventional sprinkler systems. Wide-spacing installation paired with high uniformity reduces the number of units needed per hectare, cutting equipment and labor costs. A modular architecture allows growers to customize flow rates and spacing configurations to match orchard size, topography, and crop type. Simplified installation and reduced maintenance requirements add to its economic appeal, making it a solution that not only mitigates heat damage but also optimizes operational efficiency.

From Innovation to Impact
The system’s debut builds on Orbia Netafim’s decades-long mission to help farmers “grow more with less.” By extending sustainable irrigation practices into year-round, full-area heat protection, Mega-PULSAR bridges the gap between irrigation and climate adaptation. “Today’s growers are facing a new level of agricultural risk driven by extreme weather events, especially more frequent heatwaves, and most are not prepared,” said Orit Katzir, Global Product Manager at Orbia Precision Agriculture (Netafim). “We developed Mega-PULSAR in direct response to the evolving needs of our growers, offering a scalable and efficient way to protect orchards from every angle and at every phase of orchard growth.”

Early Results, Broad Potential
Initial Mega-PULSAR installations began in Spring 2025, with early trials showing measurable increases in relative humidity and significant reductions in orchard temperatures—performance indicators that validate its promise as a transformative orchard heat mitigation tool.

As climate extremes continue to reshape agricultural risk profiles, Mega-PULSAR positions Orbia Netafim not just as an irrigation leader but as a frontline innovator in climate-resilient agriculture—a sector poised for rapid growth as food producers adapt to a hotter, less predictable world.
