ICRISAT, IFFCO, and BBSSL join forces for Seed Research Hub in Gujarat

ICRISAT, IFFCO, and BBSSL signed a Tripartite Service Agreement to set up the Beej Anusandhan Kendra, a cutting-edge seed research center in Gujarat dedicated to promoting seed innovation and sustainable agriculture

On June 3, 2025, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), and Bhartiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) entered into a Tripartite Service Agreement to establish the Beej Anusandhan Kendra (BAK), a state-of-the-art seed research center in Gujarat, India. The initiative aims to advance seed innovation and promote sustainable agriculture.

Under the agreement, ICRISAT will serve as the Knowledge Partner, responsible for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and guiding the center’s technical framework. The collaboration brings together ICRISAT’s global research capabilities, IFFCO’s leadership in the cooperative sector, and BBSSL’s commitment to seed quality and farmer outreach.

Building on a Memorandum of Understanding signed during ICRISAT’s Foundation Day celebrations, this initiative signals a strong commitment to cooperative-led innovation in agriculture.

The BAK, to be constructed by IFFCO and operated by BBSSL, will integrate advanced seed R&D infrastructure aimed at boosting productivity and resilience in Indian agriculture. ICRISAT will provide scientific and technical direction, shaping the center’s structure, core functions, and innovation strategy.

“The Beej Anusandhan Kendra represents a convergence of science, cooperation, and grassroots action,” said Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT. “Our blueprint will set the stage for a world-class hub for seed innovation and farmer empowerment.”

Leaders from BBSSL and IFFCO also emphasized the partnership’s potential to drive meaningful impact for millions of Indian farmers.

“IFFCO remains committed to strengthening agriculture through scientific innovation and collaboration,” said Mr. Yogendra Kumar, Chairman, BBSSL and Director – Marketing, IFFCO.

“This facility marks a milestone in our vision for high-quality seed development and national agricultural progress,” added Mr. Chetan Joshi, Managing Director, BBSSL.
