How cold-chain infrastructure and integrated sourcing is impacting India’s food economy

Authored by Haresh Karamchandani, MD and Group CEO, HyFun Foods

For years, India’s agricultural strength has been held back by supply chain frictions and inefficiencies. Even though the country is one of the world’s largest producers of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and staple grains , it still struggles with big post-harvest losses. This happens because storage facilities are not sufficient, logistics are scattered, and temperature-controlled transport options are limited. As per estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), roughly 30-40% of fresh produce in India ends up wasted every year before it even reaches consumers. These losses tend to hit farmer earnings, make food inflation push harder, and also show up as noticeable shortages or uneven availability for food processors, retailers, sort of in a ripple effect.

Now, as India is trying to scale its ambitions of becoming a global food manufacturing and export hub, modernising supply chains is turning into an economic must, not just a nice idea. Cold-chain infrastructure, plus integrated sourcing, are no longer “optional extras” in day to day operations; they are quickly becoming a core part of food security, supply efficiency, sustainability, and the long term competitiveness of the whole industry.

Over the last decade the importance of cold chain systems has grown quite a bit, especially as frozen foods are becoming more common, also with the rise of quick service restaurants (QSRs), modern retail chains, and online grocery platforms. Consumers now really expect their food to stay fresh, and keep its quality no matter where it’s purchased from. Because of that, there’s a growing requirement for dependable temperature controlled supply networks, ones that can preserve product integrity all the way from farm to fork , if you think about it.
