Rs 189.79 Cr Mizoram Ginger Mission launched to build global value chain for GI-tagged ginger

Convergence-Led mission to transform ginger economy in Mizoram

Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, launched the Mizoram Ginger Mission with an outlay of Rs 189.79 crore. The initiative is designed as a convergence-driven programme integrating multiple ministries including Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, and Food Processing Industries, along with NABARD, ICAR, APEDA, state institutions, and private sector partners to strengthen ginger cultivation and value chain development in Mizoram.

Focus on GI-Tagged Ginger and Post-Harvest Efficiency

Officials highlighted that Mizoram’s GI-certified ginger varieties possess pharma-grade quality with higher oleoresin content of 6–8 per cent, compared to a global average of around 3 per cent. Despite this, farmers currently receive only Rs 8–15 per kilogram while international value chains can exceed Rs 500 per kilogram. The mission seeks to address this disparity through improved processing, reduced post-harvest losses, and stronger market integration.

Integrated Infrastructure and Value Chain Development

The programme will establish one integrated processing hub and three satellite centres, supported by more than 30 targeted interventions. Around 20,000 farming households are expected to be integrated into a structured value chain built on traceability, quality assurance, and farmer-linked branding systems aimed at increasing value realisation.

From Farm to Global Markets: Branding Mizoram Ginger

The mission places strong emphasis on branding and export orientation, with targeted expansion into South-East Asia, the Middle East, and European markets. Officials outlined a long-term vision to position Mizoram Ginger as a globally recognised premium product, directly traceable to farmers and embedded in international supply chains.

Disintermediation and Farmer Value Realisation

The initiative also aims to reduce dependence on intermediaries by strengthening farmer producer organisations and cooperative structures. The stated goal is to ensure that farmers participate across the entire value chain—from cultivation and processing to packaging and exports—thereby significantly increasing income levels and reducing inefficiencies.

Part of Wider “Brand North East” Strategy

The mission is positioned within a broader regional strategy that promotes unique agricultural identities across North Eastern states, including organic farming in Sikkim, kiwi cultivation in Arunachal Pradesh, Queen pineapple in Tripura, coffee in Nagaland, and Lakadong turmeric in Meghalaya. The ginger mission is expected to serve as a model for export-led agricultural transformation in the region.
