ICRISAT–SKUAST-K pact paves way for climate-resilient farming in the Himalayas

In a landmark move to future-proof farming systems in the Himalayas, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate research, innovation, and capacity building in climate-resilient agriculture across Jammu and Kashmir.

The agreement was formalized in Hyderabad by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, and Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-K, marking the beginning of a high-impact partnership between a global leader in dryland agriculture and a premier institution rooted in one of India’s most climate-sensitive agro-ecological zones.

At the core of the collaboration is a shared mission: to mitigate the growing impact of climate change on Himalayan farming communities. The MoU lays out a roadmap for joint research initiatives, exchange programs for faculty and students, and the co-development of climate-adaptive crop varieties, sustainable technologies, and resilient farming practices. Particular emphasis will be placed on soil health, water efficiency, and integrated solutions tailored to the region’s diverse terrain.

The alliance also commits to hosting joint workshops, training programs, and farmer-oriented seminars to ensure that research breakthroughs translate into real-world resilience on the ground. Researchers, extension agents, and farmers will gain access to shared infrastructure, germplasm banks, and cutting-edge laboratories, creating a seamless pipeline from lab to land.

This collaboration comes at a critical juncture. Jammu and Kashmir’s agricultural sector is increasingly vulnerable to erratic weather patterns, declining soil productivity, and water stress—threats that could erode the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. By blending global science with local insight, the ICRISAT–SKUAST-K partnership aims to deliver context-specific, scalable solutions that support sustainable food systems and rural prosperity.

More than just a research MoU, the agreement signals a strategic alignment with national priorities like the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture and global climate agendas that emphasize adaptation, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience.

As climate volatility reshapes the agricultural landscape, this alliance sets a precedent for how cross-institutional partnerships can empower frontline communities in India’s most ecologically sensitive regions.
