Bata Krushna Sahoo, a Progressive Fish Farmer from Odisha received the Padma Shri Award from the President.

Sahoo from Sarakana Village, Balianta Block, Khordha District, Odisha ventured into aquaculture during the late eighties as a grow-out culture farmer. He expanded his enterprise into fish breeding and seed production with the technical guidance of ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar, Odisha and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha, Odisha.

Presently, he is carrying out the aquaculture operations in about 10 acres area. Sahoo is an Innovative Aqua-farmer adopting and experimenting the new methods in aquaculture. Many of the technologies developed in ICAR-CIFA were tested and refined on his farm. He adopted the scientific technology packages for carp breeding, seed production, brood rearing and grow-out culture. He is also one of the pioneer farmers for achieving early breeding in Odisha by using the ICAR-CIFABROODTM, a special broodstock feed developed by the Institute for carps.

Recognising his Entrepreneurial spirit, the institute established an Aquaculture Field School (AFS) in 2009 on his farm to facilitate the Farmer-to-Farmer Technology Dissemination. It has given him a platform to train and share his Aqua-farming experience with thousands of aqua-farmers across Odisha and different states.
