Farm-to-fork solution to improve productivity and sustainability

BL Agro Group has launched Agri Value Chain “Khet Se Kitchen Tak” to Support Farmers and Agribusiness in Lucknow, making Uttar Pradesh a self-reliant and sufficient state.

As the agri sector desperately needs to improve productivity and sustainability, this farm-to-fork solution offers just that. It creates market linkages throughout the agri value chain by clubbing the services provided by subsidiaries of the B L Agro corporate umbrella. The event was inaugurated by Yogi Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in the presence of Union Minister of State for MSME Bhanu Pratap Verma.

Four entities are synergising the “Khet Se Kitchen Tak” initiative to provide full-stack solutions to ease problems for farmers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and agribusinesses.

Leads Connect Services is providing precision farm advisory, financial, and crop risk management to the agriculture community; Rohilkhand Laboratory & Research Centre (RLRC) providing critical food testing, assaying, and certification facilities to agri-businesses at the farm gates; and BL Agro and Laxmi Agro providing market linkage, bringing finely curated, packed quality food material to consumers; kitchens through its extensive network of distributors pan India.

Apart from increasing yield efficiency, Leads Connect offers digitalisation and end-to-end analytics, including geospatial, SpaceTech and Drone as a Service (DrAAS) for precision farming.

Ghanshyam Khandelwal, Chairman, B.L. Agro, says, “UP stands on a precipice. To achieve the vision of converting it into a trillion-dollar economy, we need to fuel its agriculture and food processing engine. That’s what makes us so excited and determined to build a sustainable and linked agri-ecosystem within the state. At its base, Khet Se Kitchen Tak is about supporting farmers and agribusiness, but if you zoom out, the initiative is about making UP a self-reliant and sufficient state that doesn’t depend on anyone during any stage of the agri value chain. While the initiative encompasses all food products from pulses to oil, we will be putting the spotlight on millets like ragi, jowar, and bajra as 2023 is the International Year of Millets.

“The changing global demands are outpacing what our current agricultural and food systems can achieve,” comments Navneet Ravikar, Chairman & Managing Director, Leads Connect Services. Currently, over 50 percent of India’s population depends upon agriculture to put food on the table. Yet, the sector contributes merely 20 percent of the national GDP. All these are signals of the dire necessity of a digital transformation, which is why we are fixated on building technologies that can drive the Khet Se Kitchen Tak initiative. Our objective is to bring the consequent benefits to every acre of farmland and stakeholder in the value chain.”

Hester Biosciences Ltd has reported a consolidated revenue of Rs 73.15 crore in Q2FY23, a growth of 17 per cent YoY. The company has achieved the highest quarterly sales in its history. The substantial increase in the current quarter sales has offset the degrowth in Q1 FY23.The increase in sales largely attributes to a spurt in the demand for the Goat Pox Vaccine to control the outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle in the country.

With no specific vaccine available for LSD in India, Goat Pox Vaccine was permitted for use as a heterologous vaccine to immunise cattle against LSD. Hester has been and continues to be the dominant supplier of the Goat Pox Vaccine to various State Government bodies and in the private sector. The company’s vaccine sales have increased by 24 per cent in Q2 while it shows a degrowth in H1 due to significant low sales in Q1 for poultry vaccines.

Commenting on the performance, B. S. Yadav, Managing Director, Godrej Agrovet Limited, said, “Q2 FY23 was a mixed bag for Godrej Agrovet as we achieved solid top line growth of 13.6 per cent in Q2 FY23 and 19.4 per cent in H1 FY23 over the corresponding previous periods. However, profitability was impacted due to commodity price volatilities, sustained cost inflation, limited transmission, and an unfavourable macro environment.

Uneven monthly as well as the geographic spread of the southwest monsoon led to lower sowing of Kharif crops, mainly paddy and foodgrains. Prices of rice bran jumped sharply in Q2 due to strong demand while Maize prices continued to trend higher. Crude palm oil prices, after reaching record levels in May’22, corrected sharply owing to high inventories in two key exporting countries – Indonesia and Malaysia coupled with the resumption of supplies post-lifting of the exports ban. In the Dairy sector, milk procurement prices continued to increase further with the limited transmission. For the Poultry sector, Q2 is a seasonally weak quarter due to the festive season resulting in a sharp decline in live bird prices.”

Farm Pass serves over 600,000 farmers in India and two million globally, providing a standard interface for farmers and buyers

To economically empower smallholder farmers in rural India, Bayer, Rabo Partnerships and MasterCard have entered into a partnership to launch a scalable programme to advance the digitisation of the country’s agricultural finance ecosystem. This collaboration brings together the decades of expertise of the three companies in digital and agri finance and payments technology to bear upon the task of expanding access to agronomic knowledge, products, services, and partnerships. Over five years, the program aims to benefit 10 million smallholder farmers in India by enabling them to gain easier access to formal financial services.

Smallholder farmers account for 86 per cent of India’s agrarian economy but have difficulty sourcing quality farm products and are often at the mercy of middlemen when it comes to pricing. MasterCard’s Farm Pass is a digital ecosystem platform that works offline, even with feature phones, connecting buyers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and other agriculture ecosystem players with farmers digitally, and helping them get the best value for their produce. The solution, which serves over 600,000 farmers in India and two million globally, creates a standard interface for farmers and buyers that facilitates greater efficiency in the agriculture value chain.

The program is part of Bayer’s commitment to reach 100 million smallholder farmers worldwide by 2030 with much-needed inputs, digital tools and financial services. Bayer’s FarmRise provides various digital advisory services to smallholders today and through MasterCard’s Farm Pass digital platform, farmers will gain access to new marketplaces and a much wider pool of potential buyers, enabling them to improve their livelihoods in a commercially sustainable way. Rabo Partnerships will enable access to financial services over the platform by the Indian financial sector, by enabling data-driven credit scoring, credit analytics and product development within the partner financial institutions.

D Narain, President, of Bayer South Asia and Global Head of Smallholder Farming said, “Bayer has been working with farmers to increase their income and productivity by enabling access to best-in-class products, the latest technology, and low-cost finance. Its initiatives like Better Life Farming, food value chain partnerships, etc. are already transforming the lives of millions of farmers in India. We are delighted to now join hands with Rabo Partnerships and MasterCard to build a digital ecosystem, which will further help smallholders in India. Through this partnership, smallholder farmers will not only gain easier access to agricultural advisory services and direct market linkages, but also build their credit profiles and lower their input costs through access to institutional credit, allowing them to increase efficiency, improve crop yields, and grow their profits significantly.”

Nikhil Sahni, Division President, South Asia, MasterCardsaid, “As part of MasterCard’s pledge to connect one billion people to the digital economy, the company has been actively working with farmers in several countries to bring them onto a digital platform that directly connects them with buyers, empowering them to negotiate the best price for their produce. This is in line with the Indian government’s efforts towards inclusive growth by leveraging technology. The collaboration with Bayer and Rabo Partnerships is helping build a very effective model of agricultural digitisation that can serve as a global example.”

David Gerbrands, Global Head Advisory & Inclusive Ventures, Rabo Partnerships said: “Rabo Partnerships aims to contribute to the improvement of farmer livelihoods worldwide. Achieving this requires sustainable partnerships, which is why Rabo Partnerships is excited to partner with Bayer and Mastercard to establish a scalable digital ecosystem, enabling farmers and as well as other agricultural value chain partners with a wide array of services, including agro advisory, inputs procurement, marketing, and access to formal financial services.”
